When I was quite young, I was diagnosed with what was then called Hyperactivity. This was not a common occurrance in that day, and the idea of ADD/ADHD had not yet come to the fore (nor was this what I had) - so the idea of immediately shoving some Ritalin in your kid's mouth also did not exist. I think, also, that they are now not considered to be the same condition, where at one time I think they were.

What was suggested, and what did happen for me, is that my grandmother follow the diet found in the book I've linked here, in hopes that eliminating as many additives, preservatives, and sugars from my diet as they could, would calm down my behaviour. It did actually work, from what I recall. I stopped wandering around my classrooms and singing out loud during class time. (Now it occurs to me to wonder how annoying I actually was as a kid. Don't answer that.)

I have no idea if this book is still given any credence, nor what validity it had even then - I was too young to notice anything but the lemonade cookies I could now have.
