You know, there are people on this planet who think steam and smoke are the same. This past month, I have been transcribing presentations from a transportation conference, one which touched on the levels of particulate matter in the air around industrial sites. Smoke, you see, is comprised of particulate matter: tiny chunks of whatever it is that's being burned at the time. Steam, on the other hand, is water vapour. Every time a diesel engine goes by me now, and I cough on the stench, I wonder what the hell I'm really breathing in, in millions of micron-sized chunks.
