There is far more truth than some may realise, to the theory that in writing less is more; that one should make every word count; that if the word doesn't need to be there it shouldn't be there. If you're writing is obtuse, confused, contrived, your readers aren't going to understand you - and that, in most cases at least, is the entire point: to have someone else understand you.
There is no sin or shame in using plain speech, imaginative speech, more well-chosen or crafted speech; rather than, as Orwell thinks, being lazy and turning to already concocted turns of phrase, because you can't take the time to consider what you wish to impart - to choose the words to fit the meaning, not allowing the words to choose the meaning for you.
