Two books that annoy and frustrate me are Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles and De Sade's Justine. The first because Tess' sometimes seeming passiveness is irritating as all-get-out, and the second because I kept wanting to slap her and say, "Lady, get over it. Your virginity (or purity) is not more important than your life." And no, I don't care how symbolic it was supposed to be.
