The art of gift-giving, is just that, an art. There are some people who choose the right gifts flawlessly; it's natural for them to do so. There are others who have to put more thought into the choosing, but what they choose is no less perfect. There are those who give what you like, but you know there was no thought put to it. Mind you, there's nothing wrong with that at all; they did, after all, choose something they knew you'd like. Then there are those people whose sense of giving a gift is about as thoughtful as giving Godiva chocolate to a diabetic.
