freedom

Someone once said that "the prison to which we commit ourselves, no prison is" so, in essence, and in many ways, our freedoms are the prisons to which we choose to commit ourselves.

And that, I think, is precisely what freedom is - the only real freedom we have. We have some freedom to choose. We can't be free from disease, free from the actions of others, or even get a free lunch - but we can choose what we do about those things. We can choose how we will react to them and because of them. It's one of the Noble Truths, after all.

People often define freedom via political means. That is one of the narrowest definitions of freedom - to not be under the yoke of whatever political system you find repugnant. And those who do manage to slip from under that yoke, often find that there are now different losses along with the golden prize of gains they had their eye on. Live and let live.
