I don't like this word. I figure that next to "poor sport", "hypocrite", and "liar", it's one of the worst things you can call a person - though for different reasons than the others, normally. I've always been extremely sparing with this word, never using it to refer to women (like using the word whore), and only rarely using it on men. If I use it on either it's a seriously dire situation. If you hear me saying it, rest assured that I am in no way being humourous, or using it as frequently and casually as I use the word fuck.
