boxed life

I was once asked to list the items that I would put in a box to give to someone who doesn't know me, and to whom I can't actually say anything, that would give them some clue as to the sort of person I am. I was only to list a dozen items, but I went for lucky 13.

  1. Tea with milk.
  2. A blank notebook, with pen.
  3. An F1 racecar.
  4. The OED.
  5. A CD of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".
  6. A book containing the poems "The Road Not Taken" (Robert Frost), "If..." (Rudyard Kipling), "The Waking" (Theodore Roethke), "Still I Rise" (Maya Angelou), and the lyrics to Jimmy Cliff's "I Can See Clearly Now".
  7. The Tao Te Ching and some Zen koans.
  8. A bottle of good vodka.
  9. A dinner of slightly rare steak, potatoes (with butter and black pepper), carrots, green beans, cheesecake, and lime sorbet.
  10. A bright light.
  11. A box of crayons.
  12. A warm blanket.
  13. A picture of Uluru.
