boxed life
I was once asked to list the items that I would put in a box to give to someone who doesn't know me, and to whom I can't actually say anything, that would give them some clue as to the sort of person I am. I was only to list a dozen items, but I went for lucky 13.
- Tea with milk.
- A blank notebook, with pen.
- An F1 racecar.
- The OED.
- A CD of Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".
- A book containing the poems "The Road Not Taken" (Robert Frost), "If..." (Rudyard Kipling), "The Waking" (Theodore Roethke), "Still I Rise" (Maya Angelou), and the lyrics to Jimmy Cliff's "I Can See Clearly Now".
- The Tao Te Ching and some Zen koans.
- A bottle of good vodka.
- A dinner of slightly rare steak, potatoes (with butter and black pepper), carrots, green beans, cheesecake, and lime sorbet.
- A bright light.
- A box of crayons.
- A warm blanket.
