The loon, I think, makes one of the most solitary sounds that any bird
could make; solitary in the sense that the instant one hears it, one is
immediately transported to the middle of nowhere, possibly to a cabin in
the woods with no electricity, and the applicable nearby creepy body of water. It's a noise the camping and
cottaging Canadian is intimately familiar with. I like the sound, but I
don't like camping. My body was not meant to live in a place without all
the better amenities of modern living; like toilets, and showers, and
electricity, and no bugs.
